The current Constitution of Missouri, the fourth constitution for the state, was adopted in 1945. It provides the legislative, judicial, and executive branches. The legislative branch consists of two bodies: the Senate and the House of Representatives. These bodies consist of the Missouri General Assembly.

The House of Representatives has 163 members who are apportioned based on the last decennial census. The Senate consists of 34 members from districts of roughly equal populations. The judicial department consists of the Supreme Court of Missouri, which has seven judges, the Missouri Court of Appeals (an intermediate appellate court broken up into three districts, sitting in Kansas City, St. Louis, and Springfield), and 45 Circuit Courts which function as local trial courts. The executive branch is headed by the Governor of Missouri and includes five other statewide elected offices. Democrats hold following the election all but one.

Missouri is a US state located in the Midwestern United States, bordered by Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Missouri is the 21st most substantial and the 18th most populous. Missouri consists of 114 counties and the independent city of St. Louis. The land which is now Missouri became known as the Missouri Territory and was acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. Part of the Territory was admitted into the union as the 24th state on August 10, 1821.

Missouri mirrors the political, economical and demographic makeup of the country (in general) with a mixture of rural and urban culture. It has long been considered a political bellwether state. With the exceptions of 1956 and 2008, Missouri’s results in U.S. presidential elections have accurately predicted the next President of the United States in every election since 1904. It has both Midwestern and Southern cultural influences, revealing its history as a border state. The geography in Missouri is tremendously varied. The state’s northern portion lies in dissected till plains while the southern area lies in the Ozark Mountains (a dissected tableland), with the Missouri River separating the two. The confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers is located near St. Louis. The starting points of the Pony Express Trail and Oregon Trail were both in Missouri. The mean centre of United States population as of the 2010 Census is at the town of Plato.
